Day 3: Ancient Rome

the Colosseum & the Roman Forum

We said farewell to the Hotel Museum, and packed the coach to rendezvous once again with Elairia. This time we were magically transported back in time hundreds of centuries.

Arch of Titus, one of several triumphal arches in the Forum.

Elairia creatively curated our tour through the Colosseum. Using a series of computer generated images to help us travel back in time to when the stone seats were filled with throngs of Romans.  She explained to us the difference between actual gladiators and the romanticized versions created by Hollywood.

We strolled the same paths as St. Peter and Julius Caesar once did. Through the center of the Roman forum we passed the Temple of Romulus and the Temple of Venus and Roma.

"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

We learned about the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina; it has two entrances separated by hundreds of feet. The lowest one buried under sediment and rock until a series of excavations unearthed it.

Use the slider below to see the lashes in the columns: marks left behind by different societies over time in their attempts to'repurpose' the materials from these columns.
